Jacob and Buck's Story - A Front Royal Around the Valley Tale

Image
A note from Jerry: I had mentioned earlier this week that my time with Buck and his son Jacob had moved me to the point that I needed to retrace the journey my son Chris and I took eight years ago around the Northwest League. It was all about a Father and a Son back then and visiting with Buck and Jacob actually gave me a part of that back. The time with this father and son team led me to ask Buck if he would take the time to put his thoughts down on paper and he did just that. I read the e-mail just a minute ago and I know my daughter will probably post it before I finish my thoughts but if you only read one more thing on this site-Please let it be from Mr. Buck Smith! --- A Father and Son Journey Around the Valley for All the Right Reasons Written by Buck Smith Jacob and my trek around the league began in mid-June at Rebel Park in New Market. After showing up half way through the first inning, we found a seat in the bleachers and settled in for what we hoped would be an exciting gam...

FYI- It's 1:30 A.M. in The Big Apple and they're still playing in the All Star Game!

It is now 3-3 in the 14TH inning (1:21 AM) up at Yankee Stadium and we have to wonder when the madness will end or the teams will run out of arms ? 21 Arms have already pitched, will they play the 15TH inning? Make that 22 pitchers and now it is the bottom of the 15TH ! Texas Rangers short stop Michael Young ends the madness with a sac fly to give the AL a crazy 4-3 victory at THE STADIUM. TIME OF GAME - 4 hours/ 50 minutes

Staunton News Leader Article about Kenny and Ellen Grant

Image
To see the article the Staunton News Leader wrote about the Grant family from Stuarts Draft, click here . *Just one minor correction, the article lists Kenny and Ellen Grant as the first people to finish the Around the Valley in 60 Days 11-park tour, but they are truly numbers 6 and 7. These two are no less finished and no less worthy to be celebrated but they are numbers 6 and 7. ATV congratulates them one more time!

So the stand-up comedian says I just flew in and it was a LONG , long flight. He waits for someone to shout out "How long was it?" Well, I have been saying all season long that I have nothing but love and respect for Mr. John Leonard and his efforts at http://allthingsvalleyleague.typepad.com . Now it's time for the readers to say "How much love and respect?" The events that took place at Bulldog Field were incredible but I am going to step back and re-direct everyone that reads my work over to John's site. Yes- one of the biggest stories in recent VBL history and I think John should take front and center for the run down. I was there from 1 hour before until 1 hour after the 19 innings working the PA and our camera so we will have some fun later but for now the stage belongs to our friend Mr. John Leonard! Take it away, oh wise one! Click on the link above or the picture of John to head over to ATVL .

GeneralsSignGuyMike takes a peek inside the Bat Cave

Image
GeneralsSignGuyMike and his sidekick Benji Boy were finally cleared by Bat Cave security and deemed worthy of entrance into the one and only Bat Cave (and it's new, convenient sports museum). Mike did a huge favor for us here at ATV-60 by swinging by Chris Graham's office in downtown Waynesboro before heading up to Luray. The new edition of Chris and Crystal's magazine The New Dominion was ready for distribution and Chris had set aside 500 copies for us to pass Around the Valley. Mike was kind enough to bring us 3 cases of the magazine which enabled us to begin passing them out at Bulldog Field earlier today. Staunton Braves GM Steve Cox was able to take some back with him for Kay and Boyd Snyder to share with their fans. Linda Keen took a few copies back to Front Royal to show off until we can get more to Donna Settle and Greg Brill up at the Bing. The normal target area for The New Dominion is Waynesboro/Augusta County, Charlottesville and Harrisonburg, so a number of ...

Lets play 2! It's time for Cross League Double Header

We are within 2 hours of the 1ST pitch of game 1 of the Clark Griffith League vs. VBL show down taking place today at Bulldog Field in Luray , Va. At 4:00 PM the #1 seeded Vienna Senators (28-5) will face our/ VBL Waynesboro Generals (#11)(23-10) and then at 7:30 PM the Senators will retake the field for a showdown with the home town nine ( Luray Wranglers #5- 23-10). The games should provide our VBL a golden opportunity to compare the level of play in our league against other summer league squads. Kudos to Bill Turner, Mike Bocock and Diane Buckley from the Wranglers for getting the ball rolling after hearing from the Vienna club. I would have to think that the VBL and Lawrence Nesselrodt of Waynesboro played a big part in making this HUGE day possible. TEN QUESTIONS I WILL TAKE TO THE DIAMOND: 10. How big will the crowds be for the two ball games? 9. Will Travis Smink (ATV-60 Greg Maddux winner) take the mound for the Wranglers ? 8. Which media outlets will be aro...
