Here is a non-baseball story to Funny to pass up- Just how close are UNC and Duke?
It turns out that Butch Davis and his UNC- Tar Heels wanted to do something special for their home opener this past Saturday against McNeese State. A great deal of time is spent on the fact the schools are located just 8 miles apart on US-15/501 but what happened this week-end was too funny.
UNC hired a company out of Virginia (Aerial Adventures) to have someone (2 men) jump out of a airplane with the game ball just before kick off. I would have to imagine that seeing that happen would be pretty cool from a football fans perspective. The good folks sitting at Keenan Stadium in Chapel Hill were waiting for just that to happen Saturday afternoon.
The good news for UNC is they avoided a repeat of the scene in George Clooney's "Leatherheads" movie by having another football or two around so they didn't have to forfeit the game when their jumpers landed 8 miles down the road at Wallace Wade Stadium where James Madison University was preparing to play the Duke Blue Devils.
The story ran in the Raleigh News and Observer and then USA-Today picked up on it in the Tuesday edition of their paper. Please cue up the song- You Had a Bad day...
"In about 5 years, maybe this will be funny," Rick Steinbacher (UNC- associate AD) told the N & O. "Right now I am just glad no one was hurt."
On a bright side note- both UNC and Duke won their home openers and are both UN-defeated at 1-0. I challenge you to find out the last time that was the case???
