8 Posts in 1 Night! Must be some kinda record- Volleyball, Football and VBL all listed below for your viewing pleasure

I was able to create a number (8) of stories for the kind folks that are still checking in and I still haven't gotten to the actual game notes from the Volleyball match. But it is time to go make sure the folks of Page County receive their Friday edition of the Washington Post. Feel free to leave a note or two if you have something to add...

Inside the VBL : Greg and Cathy Brill (Front Royal)

After watching Cathy's current Wildcats Volleyball squad face off with the Panthers of Rappahannock County Thursday night I went in search of a story. Not your typical gamer but a story about a couple that appears to find ways to be a part of the community up in Front Royal year around. I should mention that Warren County dropped their match 3-0 (25-8, 25-17 & 25-16) to a talented Rapp team but as Paul Harvey says- "The rest of the Story" will be about Greg and Cathy Brill.
Cathy Brill moved to our Valley 15 years ago from Texas and she is currently in her ninth season as the Volleyball Coach of the Warren County Wildcats. Her program is still recovering from the recent creation of WCHS's sister school Skyline. The new school opened its doors last year and a number of the programs at both schools are still going thru re-growing pains if you will. Brill has coached a total of 11 players that have gone on to play college volleyball.
The high water mark for the program came back in 2003 when Brill's Wildcats captured their first regular season Northwest District title on its way to a 19 win season. Her days at WCHS haven't always been as Coach Brill though. Cathy married local Sportswriter Greg Brill back in 2004. Brill has been a fixture for a number of years in the Valley and their paths first crossed when Greg was covering a WCHS volleyball match for the Winchester Star.
"I remember the day when Greg spent about 40 minutes trying to cheer me up," Cathy said. "We had just lost a match at the Apple tourney and I was upset because it was a match we should of won. I think it was against Handley but Greg would know for sure," Cathy added.
Their paths would cross again later that season at Millbrook where Cathy was scouting a match that Greg was covering and one thing led to another for the couple. Fast forward to their first date on Halloween night a little later and you have the makings of a real life Love Story. This season Greg's roll with the Front Royal Cardinals grew and he also made the switch from PA announcer over to the Cards Web cast.
It was back in 2006-2007 that I first covered a VB match in the Valley and it was Mrs. Cathy Brill that was the first HS coach I interviewed for the Northern Virginia Daily. Until that night I had just been covering the VBL for the NVD and I was thankful to speak to a coach that was so accessible to me. Greg and Cathy Brill give a great deal of their time to the community of Front Royal and Warren County and for this I tip my cap!
Greg wasn't there last night as he was off writing a gamer for the Winchester Star but I told Cathy to let Greg know that if there is more to the story that he should catch up with me and fill in the blanks. You can check out Greg's work tonight at http://www.winchesterstar.com/ .
Best of luck to the Wildcats the remainder of the 2008-2009 season!

Valley VB : @ Rappahannock County 3, Warren County 0

Made the trip over the mountain to the campus of Rappahannock County High School for the Panthers VB match with the Wildcats of Warren County. This opened up a number of story options and a set of game notes. Linda was there with the camera to see if she could capture some pics of the coaches and players from the two schools. Warren County is coached by Mrs. Cathy Brill (9TH season) and you might recognize the name from our VBL stories this past summer. Cathy is married to Greg Brill who has his hands in a number of projects that include helping Donna Settle run the Front Royal Cardinals.

Greg also writes for the Winchester Star and that was the case tonight as he was covering the Clarke County VB match. You can check out Greg's gamer later tonight at http://www.winchesterstar.com/ .

I also had the chance to visit with Mr. & Mrs. Kritter who were there to help out 2ND year Head Coach Scott Wilde. Mr. Kritter helps Scott coach the varsity team as well as helping out with the Middle School program. The middle of the three Kritter daughters, Danika, is a sophomore playing her second season of varsity VB. Elena Kritter graduated last year and we will have an update on her progress down at Lynchburg College.

John Galle (Shenandoah Valley Herald) and Bill Meade (Page News nad Corier) were up at Strasburg to cover the Page County - Strasburg rematch and I hope one of them has the time to send on some notes later. I do know that Strasburg defeated Page County 3-0 to improve their mark to 5-2. The Rams will play both of their Shenandoah County rivals next week on the road. Tuesday 9/16 @ Central and Thursday 9/18 @ Stonewall Jackson.

Luray made the drive over to Madison County for another Shenandoah District vs. Bull Run clash. We will try to find some info on how things went for the Lady Bulldogs.

I still owe G-S-G-Mike his set of friendly football picks for Week-3 and I am hoping to add some notes on a special week-end for the Dodge family. Charlie Dodge will be going into the Warren County Hall of Fame Friday!

A number of items to get to and so little time... Each of the posts will appear below this one!

Checking in with Elena Kritter (Rappahannock County/ Lynchburg College)

Spending a few minutes with Mom and Dad Kritter last night allowed me to check with them on how their daughter Elena was adjusting to life in college.
Elena led the Panthers Volleyball program the past few seasons that included back to back trips to the Class A State semi-finals. After graduation this past summer she started classes at Lynchburg College and is playing VB for the Hornets in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Elena is one of a number of area VB players that are now playing at the next level and the former Panther has hit the floor running for 3RD year Coach Beth Ellinger. Lynchburg has already competed in a pair of tournaments with Elena making the first team f All-Tourney down in Greensboro.
The Kritter's tell us that Elena is loving playing at the next level and loving her classes. They also mention that the squad is a very young one with no seniors on the team.
She describes Coach Ellinger as dynamic as as Mom added "Happy Kids means Happy Parents".
We have invited the Kritter's to keep us posted on Elena as well as her younger sister Danika, a sophomore on this seasons Panther squad. We here that there is another little Kritter making her way up the Rapp ladder- Josie (6TH Grade) plays on the Middle School team.
For more info on Elena you can go to www.lynchburg.edu ... Continued success to the Kritter family and thanks for the time!

Week #3 of Bill Meade's Page News and Courier

Week 2 is in the books and there is a new leader- Mrs. Nerissa Viafora. Nerissa (15) went 9-3 in week two to take a 1 point lead over a trio of Prognosticators. Kevin Bush, Page Meadows and yours truly each went 8-4 to keep Nerissa in sight. Week #1 leader and host Bill Meade dropped to 12-12 after going 5-7 in the second week of action.

Generals Sign Guy Mike has remained in the spirit of supporting the site and send a set of picks in each week and we hope he will do the same this week... The format is 4 HS games, 4 NCAA games and 4 NFL games. Mike went 6-6 in week #2 to up his total to 10 Points.

Friday Night Lights with ESPN-1240 : Take #4 - Harrisonburg @ R.E. Lee

It is that time again! Chip Crabill and I will be heading down to Gypsy Hill Park in downtown Staunton, Virginia for a High School Football Showdown in this weeks edition of the Augusta County High School Game of the Week on ESPN-1240 THE BOSS.

The man of the hour this week will be young Dae' Quan Scott of R. E. Lee High. Scott was a talented junior last season but his stock skyrocketed this summer following a few combines/camps this summer. Scott has already taken the ball to the "house" as the folks like to say, 9 times in his first 3 games. Add in a 2-point conversion and the senior had put 56 points on the score board himself.

R.E Lee (3-0) will be hosting a very solid Harrisonburg team that enters the game at 2-1. We will be on the air at 6:30 PM with the tail gate show and kick-off is slated for 7:30 PM. I am looking forward to another huge crowd for the Friday Night contest between the Leeman and the Blue Streaks!

You are invited to a 20TH Anniversary Party at Bill Turner Inc. !

This Saturday from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM there will be quite a party taking place at the main lot of Bill Turner Inc @ 1203 East Main Street. Bill is the man with the plan when it comes to the VBL's Luray Wranglers and this Saturday Bill and Company will be celebrating 20 Years in the Automotive business.

Bill & Joni will have free prizes, live music and special guests for the occasion as well as balloons and face painting for the Kids. This is just another example of the folks behind the VBL working for a living and for Bill to have reached 20 years in the same community is truly a sign of his commitment to the Town of Luray.

Check out Bill's new website at http://www.billturnercars.com/ and you should stop by on Saturday as join the party!
