1984 Chicago Cubs Draft Pics- Greg Maddux and Jamie Moyer
We have to go back to 1984 Cubs Draft Room (1/4 century ago) to talk about the pitching match-up for Philadelphia @ San Diego Friday night... It would appear that someone had done their homework... The Cubs General Manager that season was Dallas Green. Green had two first round picks that year and selected Drew Hall and Damon Berryhill (4TH overall)
The second round pick for the Cubs was a young pitcher from ValleyHigh School in Las Vegas, Nevada that most scouts stumbled across when looking at his older brother Mike. Greg Maddux was drafted in the second round and he managed to make his MLB debut on my birthday in 1986. I was turning 23 that day and I noticed this 20 year old rookie pitching for the Cubs. The story just developed from there. Older brother Mike is still wearing a big league uniform as well- as the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers.
The sixth round draft pick that day for the Cubs was a pitcher from St.Joseph's named Jamie Moyer. Yes, that Jamie Moyer. Moyer was 3+ years older than Maddux after his college days as a Hawk. The crafty left hander is still going strong (10-7 3.81 ERA) and has managed to compile a career mark of 240-185. Moyer has done this while being the only pitcher left in the Bigs that makes Maddux look like a power pitcher. Moyer is approaching his 46TH birthday and the fact that he still gets big league hitters out is simply NUTS!
While Greg started out as Mike's little brother, Jamie married into fame. Mrs. Moyer is the daughter of Notre Dame/ESPN's Digger Phelps. I was watching Moyer pitch for years when both of us were in Seattle and you couldn't pull for a nicer person. These two will take 593 MLB wins and 87 years of age and it is a safe bet 87 will be the highest number in play tomorrow night at Petco....
Both veterans are listed as 6'0 185 pounds...
It really should be a Game for the Ages!
