Final: Luray 10, Covington 5

Ryan Schimpf:
4 for 5 (1 HR, 1 double, 2 singles)
1 run
5 RBI's

Winning pitcher:
Drew Rucinski
Losing pitcher: Mike Pierce

Liberty's Jeff Jefferson went 3 for 5 and hustled down to first base after a strike out to reach base 4 of 5 times. The real story was the fifth at bat. Jefferson led off the top of the second inning and crushed a ball to the deepest part of Casey Field. Both Raphael Turner and Derrick Washington were heading to the wall in the bend of left center field at top speed. Turner started coaching Washington on when he would hit the fence and then the ball cleared the fence...

If I hadn't been watching that part of the contest from 20 feet away I would not be able to desrcibe just what Washington accomplished. Washington jumped into the fence and ACTUALLY BROUGHT THE BALL BACK FROM THE OTHER SIDE! I have seen a number of home run saving catches up close but I had never seen a ball clear the fence and then be brought back into the field of play like that.

We have a ton of pics, just as many game notes and a post game visit with Luray's Jordan Yost and Covington's Andy Challot...

Rebecca is putting up the pics from last night while I finish this thanks to the kind folks of the Covington Holiday Inn Express. I feel smarter having typed this in the Holiday Inn Express parking lot last night!
