Waynesboro at Covington by GeneralsSignGuyMike

Covington moves on to VLB Championship with a 6-0 victory
Written by Michael Kerr

The season came to a surprising end in Covington tonight when the Waynesboro Generals fell short, losing to the Covington Lumberjacks 6-0. The Jacks won the series in a sweep 2-0 after winning last night 4-2 at Kate Collins Field. Covington will face Luray at Wranglerville for Game 1 on Sunday.

Covington has not lost yet in the playoffs and has only given up a total of 6 runs in 4 games. During the season they had a hot batting team, but pitching has been superb here in the postseason. They lead the league in BA, with the Generals in 2nd, but the shocking stat is with Covington ranked 10th in pitching ERA.

The Lumberjacks yet again had another complete game from starter Jeremiah Meiners who went 9 innings, gave up 0 runs, 4 hits, 4 strikeouts and 1 walk.

The Generals ace Adam Liberatore was the starter for Game 2 and he did an amazing job once again from what I've seen. In the 5th inning he gave up 1 run on 2 hits, the lone run in the inning was a solo HR by Joe Van Meter. Liberatore had a no hitter for the 1st 4 innings. Adam Liberatore pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs, (2 unearned from errors), 2 hits, 3 strikeouts and 4 walks. Kaleb Fleck then came in and pitched 2 2/3 innings only giving up 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 3. Daniel Wiltz pitched the 8th and struck out 2.

Rhett Stafford had 2 hits tonight, Gabriel Saade had one hit and both Brandon Sizemore and Derek Hamblen reached on errors.

The Generals finished the 2008 year with a 32-17 record and were the 2008 Southern Division champions (3rd straight year with a regular season or division championship). Way to go Generals and for all the Generals fans out there, we all can't wait for 2009 to get here, which is just about 10 months from now.

I will have another writeup with my review on the Generals season here in just a few days. Who will win the championship: Covington or Luray, soon we will all find out!

Box score:
Waynesboro Generals 0 4 2
Covington Lumberjacks 6 4 2

WP: Jeremiah Meiners (2-0)
LP: Adam Liberatore (6-1)
GO GENERALS!!!
