A Few Snapshots of John Leonard

Image
Here are a few pictures of John Leonard from our night together in Waynesboro. Look for more on John to come. John Leonard takes in the action of the game while his eldest daughter, Anisa, snaps a few pictures for the blog. Karen, John and Anisa take the time for a quick family photo. John interviews Jim Critzer, the face of the Waynesboro General team. John Leonard is working hard even after the game is over. John doesn't quit working until he has a seat in the car, again.

Another great night at the ball park ! June 12,2008

Plenty of cool things to report in the ATV-60 wrap- up for Thursday June 12,2008. Lets start out by sharing the great news that John Leonard posted earlier on his sight (All Things Valley League) about the feature story from the Daily News Record. Teresa posted it to the Turks home page pretty quick and it is a great read about the hard work our friend does every day for the love of the game! Rebecca and I were down at Bulldog Field for the tilt between Harrisonburg and Luray . Before the game started I was able to help coordinate a five minute celebration of the season just completed by the LHS Bulldogs (26-2). The crowd was great and thanks to some help from both Luray skipper Mike Bocock and majority owner Bill Turner the tribute went off without a hitch. I thanked Bob Wease over the PA for allowing the first pitch to be delayed for five minutes while I introduced the players one by one. By my count we had 19 of the 21 total players/coaches and staff! Rebecca took some pictu...

Please click over to All Things Valley League !

I always click over to John's sight before signing off and what a treat! We spent some time together last night and I also met his lovely wife for the first time. Bruce had invited me to throw out the first pitch last night and I grabbed John on the way out. He had no advance notice of the special event (I am trying to help out) and I know it meant more to me to share it with him. He has posted great coverage from last night and you need to jump over to the right side of our page and click over to his site!

Friday Night w/ Mike Schikman (WSVA-550 AM)

I am looking forward to the visit with Mike down at the radio station in Harrisonburg tonight. The coolest part of the promotion up until now has been getting to spend some time with the likes of Mike Barber, Chris Graham and speaking to groups like the Shenandoah Valley Grandstand Managers Club of New Market. After tonight I will be able to add one of the most loved and respected voices of our valley in Mike Schikman. I need to thank Teresa (Mrs.Turk) for the effort- I hope she didn't twist Mike's arm to hard for this opportunity. I guess if Mike is wearing a sling tonight I will know the answer to that question! Everybody is so, so busy these days and for Mike to take the time to visit with both John Leonard (All Things Valley League) and myself is a blessing. We are just 8 days way from the first pitch of another great Valley League Baseball season and sitting down with Mike should give us one more chance to spread the word about the best kept secret in baseball. The broadc...

The Eagles.. Better than ever @ JPJ Arena/ WSVA

I took a one evening break from baseball and worked my way over to UVA last night to watch the Eagles perform at the JPJ. It had been 30 years since the last time I had the pleasure of watching Glen Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmidt and Joe Walsh take the stage. While my season tickets to watch the Hoos play had me very familiar with the building, it was my first time seeing a concert there and I left there quite impressed. The banner said the JPJ had been named best new concert venue last year and I would strongly suggest catching a show there in the future if you have the chance. It didn't hurt that I was able to listen to the greatest collection of musicians (just my humble opinion) play for over 3 hours. The highlight of the night came when Joe led the band in an extended version of "Life's Been Good" and to segway back to baseball- with the Valley League opener just days away- I can say "Life is Good". Another tip of the cap to Teresa in Harris...

Greetings from Lubbock, Texas- Let's play two!

The weather forecast for today here in Lubbock is 90 and sunny and it is time to head over to Texas Tech for the 1:00 p.m. start of the double header between the host Red Raiders and the visiting Dallas Baptist University Patriots. Texas Tech is coming off a 12-10 victory yesterday over #8 Oklahome State in Stillwater despite spotting OSU an 8-0 lead. TT (22-28) will look to payback the team from DBU (33-16) for a 16-7 road loss last week back in Dallas. The tie into the Valley League for me today is the five former or future Luray Wranglers that play for DBU, including lefty reliever senior Wayne Dowling (Loveland,Co.). Dowling spent the second half of the season with our family in Luray last year and a made him a promise that I would make a trip to watch him pitch before the season was over. Things got pretty busy with trying to get the promotion off the ground and before you know it the last week of the regular season is here. 1,858 miles was the total for the journey down but a ...

Mr. Shaun Cox and John Leonard strikes again!

Life is good today in the world that is "Around The Valley in 60 Days". I just finished reading John Leonard's post on his blog from the Friday night dinner in New Market and the recap was excellent! Please take the time to read it at All Things Valley League. The post came early this morning- I imagine sometime between breakfast for his girls and his first period class at the High School. The second pleasant surprise came in a phone call from Mr.Shaun Cox. I was able to talk with Shaun (News Leader) for nearly a half hour about two things I love- baseball and the Valley League. I need to pass on a thank you to Boyd and Kay Synder from the Braves organization for their help with getting the News Leader on board. Mr.Cox is new to the area having moved from the Lexington, Ky. area recently and would appear to be a big time baseball fan! When he mentioned Lexington it gave me one more opportunity to talk about what I call the greatest baseball game not many know about...

Time to say THANKS for the support !

The list of people who have helped pave the way in getting the idea of Around The Valley in 60 Days is growing so I felt it was time to stop and update the list! My Daughters-Sabrena and Rebecca for their hours of work on the design and lay-out side of things. This is finals time at UVA so Rebecca has taken a break from updating the Web Pages but will be back at it soon! Dan Simpson- Washington Post Circulation Manager- Dan leads the team at the Post that is responsible for the majority of work I do at Crystal Clear Delivery. Mike Petre & Chuck McGill- The two most recent Sports Editors from the Northern Virginia Daily that gave me the opportunity to cover the league the past two seasons. Randy Arrington- Editor of Page News and Courier and responsible for Shenandoah Valley Herald as well. Randy was there from the beginning when the idea was little more than scribbled on a napkin. His Sports editors Bill Meade (Page) and John Galle (Shenandoah) have both been great to work with and...

Spending an evening with a CLASS ACT !

Last night gave me a rare opportunity to speak to a group of people with so much in common. Bruce Alger, the General Manager of the New Market Rebels, asked me if I would be one of the guest speakers at the teams 2008 Preseason Dinner. The only sad part was Bruce asked me to try and limit my talk to 10-12 minutes. It is rare I can talk baseball, let alone my love for Valley Baseball and limit it to 10-12 minutes but I promised Bruce I would give it my best shot.My wife Linda and I sat at a reserved table with John Leonard,Rebel intern Katie Getz and a very friendly family of four(Gisriel). Mr. Austin Gisriel was there to speak as well and he was joined by his wife and daughter along with her boyfriend. Austin is writing a lenghty article on the Valley League for Virginia Living and was a treat to get to trade stories with. Mr. Leonard, the keeper of the World's Finest Blog (All Things Valley League) is always enjoyable company as we share a true love for the game and the league. The...

The Perfect Double Header

Image
This weekend was sort of the kick-off of the promotion and we had the souvenir stand at Rebel Park in New Market at the two double headers covered with free gifts and information about Around the Valley in 60 Days. The whole weekend went as well as we could've hoped and we had a lot of fun with some local as well as Pennsylvanian friends. At the event we were giving away planners with different VBL team's home games in them, many gifts from the USA Today , free Northern Virginia Daily 's on Saturday, free Washington Posts on Sunday, gifts from the Northern Virginia Daily and gifts from the New York Times . Overall, we had a blast and we really appreciated the support of newspapers, local and nation-wide. Rebecca Carter and Sean Cantrell spent the time from 1PM until the end of both double headers handing things out and answering any questions people had. We just wanted to make sure the information was out there for whoever wanted it and to watch some talented kids play bas...
