An unexpected trip to Radford U./ On the road with the Bulldogs

My dad has always poked fun at me for how many items I will add to a plan once I have it in place. He is down in Knoxville,Tn retired and taking care of my Mom these days. This past week he would of been laughing pretty loud (how loud- you might could of heard him up here!) if he had all the happenings in front of him. We run a business that keeps us busy from 11:00 p.m. until around 8:00 a.m. 365 days a year and that in itself makes life interesting . Add in all the leg work to Around The Valley in 60 Days and the office work that goes with the Post job and I started wondering how I would survive 11 trips in 11 days? The plan was simple- rest up for the week before and don't add to the plate! Well, a funny thing happened on the way to start the promotion- Monday 5/26 (Memorial Day) was a home game for the Bulldogs as they hosted George Mason in the opener of the playoff run. I headed down to the field, watched every pitch and took some great notes. Rebecca was off on a fami...

Greetings from Troutville, VA

We're writing to you this morning from the side of I-81 in the beautiful village of Troutville , VA. We are 41 miles outside of Radford , VA and the campus of Radford University. First pitch for the Luray Bulldogs' state semifinal game is just over 2 hours away. When the game is finished, we'll race back up I-81 for stop number 7 on our tour around the valley for what we believe is the greatest match-up in the Valley League - Luray at New Market . Jerry will be doing the color commentary alongside Craig Orndorff and Ace Photographer Rebecca will be snapping off pictures to accompany the write-up. We promise to make all of this available to you Bulldog fans as soon as possible.

A quick visit to LHS to send off the Bulldogs!/ A call from Craig Orndorff

Rebecca and I headed up to the High School to catch the baseball team heading to Radford University for their game @ 1:00 p.m. Friday. Coach had made a few minutes available with the team for some photos and to pass out some paperwork for a project we are working on for the team. We were at the school for about 20 minutes and enjoyed it all. Chase Suddith (part of the support staff for the team) must of been on the blog today because he asked when I woke back up. I had mentioned earlier it was after 6:00 a.m. when I unloaded the car. While I was in the gym I saw I missed a call from one of our favorite "Valley Good Guys", Craig Orndorff . Craig will be broadcasting the Luray game tomorrow on the Internet and is trying to work something out with the AM station here in town. Craig offered me the color commentator chair for the game in Radford and I couldn't say Thanks/Yes quick enough! Some of the pictures from our visit will be up before we head north to Winch...

4 "Valley Teams" look to advance to Prep Final 4

Tuesday night I will be joining Donna Settle, Greg Brill and company in Front Royal as Around The Valley makes stop #4 of 11. Four is the number of the night as four area teams will do battle on four diamonds with the hopes of advancing to the Final Four. ____________________________________________________________________ Class- A Lets start in Luray , where the host Bulldogs (25-1) welcome Lancaster (16-7) into town. Luray defeated Strasburg in the Region B championship last Friday which gave Coach Steve Griffith and his nine the right to play at Bulldog Field. Griffith has been kind enough to call me a couple of times but we have yet to visit. The season the Bulldogs are having is history in the making and if Ace lefty Richard Galindez has his good stuff it could continue down to Radford for a Friday semi-final. Luray AD Don Ehlers shared some thoughts with me about the team and I will put them in story form- win or lose Tuesday night. The Page News and Courier will have Bi...

Good Morning or late evening Date Line: Woodstock

Good Morning! What a great night last night in Woodstock. I great deal of thought went into the choice of going to the New Market @ Woodstock game on opening night. I answered a ton of questions last night and was smiling the entire time. I like the format of the top ten list so here is one from last night: THE TOP LIST OF WHY LAST NIGHT WAS SO GREAT! 10. I had been invited to be a guest speaker at the New Market Rebels / Shenandoah Valley Grandstand Managers club dinner earlier this year. After a great evening with very knowledgeable and caring baseball fans I knew this group would be there with passports in hand looking for the River Bandits stamp. They exceeded my expectations as the Rebel faithful showed up in groves despite the threat of thunder storms. 9. Stu and Mrs. Richardson had been great right out of the box where the promotion was concerned. Stu had everything set up right where we needed it to be and was as gracious of a host owner as one could hope for. 8. Craig Orn...

Opening Day

Image
Today was the best day our Around the Valley team could ask for as we traveled from Luray, VA, to Woodstock, VA, to get our first passport stamp! Jerry, Rebecca, Linda, Sabrena and Diamond (our puppy) arrived on the scene just before 6:00 pm where we were given a great spot to greet fans as they entered the park. We enjoyed the company of a River Bandit faithful who is giving birth to her sixth child on Monday morning! When asked who would take her spot she replied, "I don't expect to be out more than week or so!" The fans trickled in and by game time the park was full of both Rebel and River Bandit fans excited about the beginning of two months of great summer baseball. Your usual blog poster - Jerry Carter - is out doing his "real" job delivering the Washington Post but will bring you the Around the Valley narrative you've grown to love. We're hoping to get him to take a nap after he gets off around 7:00 am so you can expect that you'll see a post ...

Now you know the rest of the story! Luray wins 12-7

I've always said you can judge the importance of a ball game by the number of media outlets there to cover the action! I had mentioned Craig Juer ( NVD ) and Bill Meade ( PN &C) but that was just the tip of the ice burg . Greg Brill was there to represent the Winchester Star, John Galle covering the Rams for the Shenandoah Valley Herald and Ace camera lady Rebecca Carter was snapping pictures for Around The Valley in 60 Days. I had the best seat in the house for two reasons- (1st) I was sitting next to Mr. Craig Orndorff and he's as good with play-by-play as anyone around. (2nd) The broadcast booth/table is only about 10 feet removed from home plate! The crowd was every bit as big as I had expected. Strasburg AD Matt Hiserman estimated the gathering at 700-750 with a fair amount of Luray maroon mixed in with the home team purple. Luray (25-1) sent Ryan Carroll to the mound which sent me in search of Mr.Carroll to ask him when the last time Ryan pitched. The ...

How 'Bout them Bulldogs?

Luray captured the title, defeating the Strasburg Rams 12-7 tonight at Strasburg! Go 'dogs! Some random pictures. Story to come! Some more game pictures to be posted later :) Dan with the Around the Valley poster. Epic brain trust. Stretching, stretching... and he's out ! What an awesome slide! The amazing hit just blew the signs away... or was it the outfielder's body crashing into them? Way to go! Safe at first! Way to stay on your toes... Right after the home run. Epic. The scoreboard after the home run. Beautiful. ...is he going to be out? From the looks of it, he might be. Nope! Safe! Trying to pick us off first, again. Safe! Some base hit love on first. Some more base hit love. One epic rally shown on the scoreboard. Way to go, 'dogs! Right after the game. Post-game meeting. The Dream Team. Bill Meade hard at work. Pimp that trophy. Champs! Dad and Craig - broadcasters for the game.
