Travis Smink carries Luray to a 3-0 Game One Victory
We have had a great deal of fun both on and off the field with Travis Smink this summer to it was nice to have the best seat in the house for what I have to say is the most dominant pitching performance of the 2008 Valley Baseball League season.
Now let me finish before you start screaming at the computer monitor. I know that Lance Baxter tossed a no-no for Staunton and that Waynesboro's Adam Liberatore had nights that he looked UN-hittable but Smink was on the biggest stage of the Summer as his team is looking to capture their second VBL crown in the past three seasons.
The lefty from Virginia Military Institute worked 8 innings while allowing just two singles. Yes, there was two Covington hitters that got the best of Smink during the game but both then suffered the same fate. Rico Noel (Coastal Carolina) in the first inning and Derrick Washington (Hill College) in the seventh inning collected singles and then were picked off first base by Smink.
Smink did walk four Lumberjacks (actually just 2 but he walked Marcus Nideffer three times) but managed to pick off Nidiffer one time to give him three for the contest. The final line for Smink read like this.....
Innings-8.0
Runs- 0
Hits- 2
Runners touching third base- 0
Walks-4
Strike Outs- 11
John Leonard was at Bulldog Field tonight and I know he will be around later to write/post
a "gamer" over at http://allthingsvalleyleague.typepad.com/ so I will stick to a lighter side when I get back in from work. We had fun with the ATV-60 Lottery before the game and with Travis Smink after the game so please check back. Linda and Rebecca both had the cameras going so there will be pics abound as well.
Head over to John's site and we will post notes and pics later !
