Shenandoah District Tourney : Page captures 4TH straight win / Gap upsets Stonewall Jackson

SHENANDOAH -The Page County Lady Panthers played their 4TH match in the past 8 days Monday night in the opening round of the Shenandoah District Tournament. Playing in front of an electric home crowd, PCHS captured their fourth straight by defeating Riverside 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-18, 25-20).

The latest victory moves the PCHS over to Eastern Mennonite University for a (6:30 P.M.-Wednesday) semi-final showdown with top seeded Wilson Memorial. #6 seed Buffalo Gap also advanced to EMU with a surprising 3-1 win over #3 seed Stonewall Jackson. The Lady Bison will face #2 Luray 20 minutes after the end of the Page - Wilson contest on Wednesday night.

Page County stood at 1-6 last Monday night when the Lady Panthers took to the court for a make-up game against Buffalo Gap. The night was a special one as PCHS celebrated the 4 State Championship teams from the late 80's and at the same time started the latest winning streak with a victory over the Lady Bison.

PCHS added a pair of victories later in the week by defeating Stonewall Jackson at home and then Riverheads on the road. The match against the Lady Gladiators last Thursday decided where the #4 vs. #5 match would be played. The Lady Panthers defeated Riverheads to bring to District opener back to Shenandoah and the home crowd came out in full force to support the latest victory.

"At the half way point in the District our record was 1-4", Head Coach Alan Knight said. "But all 4 of the loses came in five game matches."

PCHS rebounded in the back half of the season to finish with a 3-2 mark in the district. The only two losses came at the hands of Luray and Wilson Memorial. Knight was able to list a number of reasons for the latest success.

" They are really at a point where they are starting to trust each other on the court," Knight added. "We are hitting and passing better and the girls have an improved understanding of who is capable of getting to each ball. Anissa Price had a tremendous match hitting for us tonight."
